How Greed Affects The Lives Of People - 935 Words

It is hard to believe how greed affects the lives of people. Often people do not realize that money and power are not everything in life. During the Industrial Revolution many people let their lives be heavily manipulated by their material wants rather than their needs. As a result they were often unhappy with the lives they had while others were in abundance of happiness. Charles Dickens lived during the Industrial Revolution and knew what life was like during those times (BBC - Primary History - Famous People - Charles Dickens). In Hard Times, Dickens portrays the lives of a group of people who were directly affected by the Industrial Revolution. Thomas Gradgrind, Louisa Gradgrind, and Josiah Bounderby are three characters that are deeply affected by the Industrial Revolution in the novel. The novel begins by giving us an overview of Thomas Gradgrind beliefs. This man who is the first character to be introduced to the readers in Hard Times is portrayed as a monotone, mechanized man who relies solely on facts and nothing more. In the novel he is described as, â€Å"A man who proceeds upon the principle that two and two are four, and nothing over, and who is not to be talked into allowing for anything over† (Dickens, Book the First, CH II). He also owns a school where children do not seem to have an individual personality as they are reduced to mere number on a list, as he refers to a girl not by her name but as â€Å"girl number twenty†. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-Avon on April 26, 1564, to a farmer named John Shakespeare. No one knows the exact date he was born, but church records show that he was baptized on April 26. Shakespeare had seven brothers and sisters. His first publication was Venus and Adonis in 1593. It was dedicated to 18 years old Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton. The dedication received patronage, after receiving it Shakespeare dedicated his next dramatic poem, Lucrece, to the young lord as well.Today Shakespeare is known as the greatest playwright. By 1596 Shakespeare was very successful as a playwright. At this time Shakespeare was already a well-established actor with a great reputation. His plays were attracting a lot of interest, he had theaters fullback in the 16th century. It’s impossible to know the exact date that Shakespeare started writing Hamlet, but he finished it in 1601. Hamlet is the most widely performed play, its estimated that it’s being performed every minute of every day somewhere around the world. Its Shakespeare’s longest play at 4,042 lines, its said that the character Hamlet has about 1530 lines, which is the most of any character that Shakespeare made. Hamlet is considered a tragedy/revenge tragedy. It was written in London, England and first published in 1603 in a pirated quarto edition titled The Tragicall Historie of Hamlet and then it was published again in 1604 in a superior quarto edition. In the play, Hamlet feels a responsibility to avenge his father’s murder. Claudius, who is Hamlet uncle, is the main suspect for Hamlet’s father murder but since Claudius became the king after marrying Hamlet’s mother, Claudius is very protected. Making it very difficult for Hamlet to find the truth about his father murder. After becoming depressed and summoned home to attend his father’s funeral, he is shocked to hear that his mother Gertrude is already remarried. Hamlet’s father then comes to him as a ghost and tells him he wants him to avenge his death. The Ghost triangular relationship between Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius is very much strong and makes the whole play.As we know the Ghost has come to Hamlet as â€Å"Hamlet’s father†. In the starting of the play when Hamlet is introduce to this ghost he is very wary and doesn’t trust anything he says. â€Å"GHOST: My hour is almost come. When I to sulfurous and tormenting flames. Must render up myself. HAMLET: Alas, poor ghost! GHOST: Pity me not, but lend thy serious hearing. To what I shall unfold. HAMLET: Speak. I am bound to hear. GHOST: So art thou to revenge when thou shalt hear. HAMLET: What? GHOST: I am thy father’s spirit† (Act 1 Scene 5). Some literary critics would say Hamlet relationship with this ghost is just a pigment of his imagination but regardless young Hamlet just lost a person who meant a great amount to him. His mother Gertrude, keeps telling him to move on, â€Å"GERTRUDE: Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted color off, And let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark. Do not forever with thy vailà ¨d lids. Seek for thy noble father in the dust. Thou know’st ’tis common. All that lives must die, Passing through nature to eternity. HAMLET: Ay, madam, it is common. GERTRUDE: If it be, Why seems it so particular with thee? HAMLET: â€Å"Seems,† madam? Nay, it is. I know not â€Å"seems.† ‘Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother, Nor customary suits of solemn black, Nor windy suspiration of forced breath, No, nor the fruitful river in the eye, Nor the dejected ‘havior of the visage, Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief, That can denote me truly. These indeed â€Å"seem,† For they are actions that a man might play. But I have that within which passeth show, These but the trappings and the suits of woe.† (Act 1 Scene 1). This is a conversation Hamlet and his mother had before he met the ghost, he didn’t want his mother to just tell him to stop moping about the death of his father. In fact, as the play goes along he asks his mother why isn’t she moping around. In the play, Hamlet mentions, several times on different occasions that his mother committed a sin by marrying his uncle. He has a very deep angry towards his mother for doing it and he mentioned to her that he didn’t want her to be his mother. Hamlet angry towards his mother wasn’t created by the ghost, the ghost tells Hamlet to respect his mother at some point of the play but it doesn’t stop the ghost from igniting Hamlets angry. The ghost, or better known as Hamlet father, also mentions Gertrude sins. â€Å"GHOST: Ay, that incestuous, that adulterate beast, With witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts—O wicked wit and gifts, that have the power. So to seduce!—won to his shameful lust. The will of my most seeming-virtuous queen. O Hamlet, what a falling off was there! From me, whose love was of that dignity. That it went hand in hand even with the vow I made to her in marriage, and to decline Upon a wretch whose natural gifts were poor To those of mine. But virtue, as it never will be moved, Though lewdness court it in a shape of heaven,So lust, though to a radiant angel linked, Will sate itself in a celestial bed And prey on garbage.† ( Act 1 Scene 5). Hamlet’s relationship with the ghost was created by the angry he felt towards Gertrude and Claudius, before the ghost mentioned ‘murder’ Hamlet knew something was up not only about his mother marrying her dead husband’s brother but also the fact that Claudius took the crown from him.The ghost didn’t really have a relationship with Gertrude and Claudius. In fact, the only people who seem to see or conversate with the ghost is Hamlet. The ghost relationship with Gertrude is merely just the betray Hamlet father feels towards her. The ghost doesn’t ask Hamlet to avenge his mother, the ghost actually tells hamlet to let God deal with her. â€Å"GHOST: Let not the royal bed of Denmark be A couch for luxury and damnà ¨d incest. But howsoever thou pursuest this act, Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive Against thy mother aught. Leave her to heaven And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge To prick and sting her. † Hamlet’s father wasn’t really focused on his wife. His angry was more for his brother, the one that seduced his wife, poisoned him and took his crown. Claudius gained Gertrude trust, where she would go to him about a problem rather than anybody else, for example when Hamlet kills Polonius, Gertrude confided in Claudius. She is also always defending him, some would say she loved Claudius more than she loved her own son. In act 3 scene 3, Shakespeare introduced a play within Hamlet, Claudius who was on the sidelines watching the play begun to feel remorse for killing his brother. This gave Hamlet confirmation that the ghost was telling the truth about his murder, and also the opportunity to kill Claudius. â€Å"CLAUDIUS: Thanks, dear my lord. Oh, my offense is rank. It smells to heaven. It hath the primal eldest curse upon ‘t, A brother’s murder. Pray, can I not. Though inclination be as sharp as will, My stronger guilt defeats my strong intent, And, like a man to double business bound, I stand in pause where I shall first begin, And both neglect. What if this cursà ¨d hand. Were thicker than itself with brother’s blood? Is there not rain enough in the sweet heavens, To wash it white as snow? Whereto serves mercy But to confront the visage of offence? And what’s in prayer but this twofold force, To be forestallà ¨d ere we come to fall Or pardoned being down? Then I’ll look up. My fault is past. But oh, what form of prayer Can serve my turn, â€Å"Forgive me my foul murder†? (Act 3 Scene 3). This scene made Hamlet’s anger towards Claudius grow and his relationship with the ghost strong. Claudius has no clue that Hamlet knows about his sins, and although Claudius can’t physically see the ghost, as he’s praying he can somehow feel the ghost presences. The ghost somehow creates the main conflicts within the play without really being in the play. In conclusion, Shakespeare, the greatest playwright of all time, has left us with many mysteries in Hamlet. But one thing that we all know is that, if there wasn’t a ghost the play would have no meaning. The ghost came back to the kingdom to ask Hamlet to avenge his murder, and because of this, it creates the main points of the play. In some opinion, Hamlet’s madness was caused by the ghost. Some think Hamlet’s madness was caused by the betrayal he felt towards his mother and uncle. Shakespeare has given us a play that leaves us wondering and looking for answers. This is replicated globally due to few women taking engineering courses (Hill Corbett St Rose, 2010). The diversity requirement is necessary to achieve success in airlines when competing in a global economy. The benefits of having diverse workforce include rapid growth of organization, maintenance of high revenues and profits, increased productivity, build of solid infrastructure, better customer service delivery and increased innovativeness (Stevens, Plaut Sanchez-Burks, 2008). Workplace diversity can be achieved through diversity recruitment however, poor implementation of recruitment policies hamper realization of the dream. It is reported that there persist minimal cases of inequality, discrimination and workplace exclusion in Qantas Airline thus hampering diversity recruitment. Lack of support and commitment from top management has slowed realization of workplace diversity in the company. The recent changes in HR department is expected to increase financial performance of Qantas (HCA, 2015). Scarcity of workforce The larger portion of transport requires personnel for hospitality and customer care due to stiff competition in air transport as a result of globalization. In the recent times, Qantas Airline saw the need to adopt technology in its process due to huge technological demands impacting the transport industry. It is reported that many customers globally are preferring electronic forms of purchases especially making orders and making payments (Neiberger, 2008). The technological advancement has helped the company to serve its customers well. However, Qantas has find it challenging to find potential employees that has the ability and skills to maintain highest level of technical competency when it comes to upholding safe and ethical practices with regard to use of technology. A recent study by Hampson et al. (2015) reveals that Australia is among the countries that is likely to be hit hard by global workforce shortage in aircraft maintenance and is estimated to be 30% by 2025. Some of the reasons lowering availability of workforce in aircraft industry in Australia is stiff regulations pertaining training and licensing. Some of the proposed means to address the problem include expansion of training facilities, keeping the engineers productively employed to provide their requisite skills until market demand revives, reforming learning and other training institutions to ensure that new generation of highly qualified engineers are delivered to the market and harmonizing career paths to maintain balance in workforce joining aviation and aerospace manufacturing (Hampson et al., 2015). It is therefore imminent that Qantas find creative solution to attract and retain skilled workforce for the technical support, managerial position, pilots and customer care. High cost of recruitment Qantas faces a major challenge of high cost both direct and indirect that is associated with hiring. The company has relied for long term job advertisements on its website, however, due to inefficiency the company has resorted to combine website with other forms of advertisement for job vacancies including print media especially local newspapers and television channels. Qantas experiences huge cost of advertising for the available vacancies apart from paying recruitment consultants and agencies especially when hiring employees to take senior positions. The skill and talent shortages in Australia for air transport sector is proving too expensive for transport firms. Qantas has to put up with high cost associated with hiring and training new employee. Gap required to fill a given position with right staff result in loss of productivity. Another challenge is balancing skills and experience during recruitment. It is reported that many organizations in air transport sector in Australia values a candidate with more experience over qualifications. It is important to recognize that each job requires set of skills and it is therefore important for organization to balance between skills, qualification and organizational branding. In the US, a major problem of workforce is manifesting itself as baby boomers are retiring faster compared to aging workforce. This creates challenge in transferring knowledge to productive young labor force required to attain competitiveness. Complicated hiring process Qantas has long process of hiring starting from advertisement until selection thus slowing hiring process (Sarina Lansbury, 2013). The first step involving pre-qualification encompasses viewing CV and other documents of applicant. The detailed application process further requires applicant to provide more information that requires more time for reviewing. Consequently, competency and long interviews are conducted stepwise in interval of more than a week. Similarly, skills exams and background check take significant time and some potential employees may lose hope of getting job due to lengthy procedures (Sarina Wright, 2015). Inability to offer competitive salary packages The availability of information to the employees has made it easily for them to find firms that offer competitive packages. Qantas is not able to offer high salary to its employees due to its strategy to lower prices for its customers particularly fair in order to remain competitive (Graf, 2005). As a result, the low profitability has forced company to offer low salaries to its employees. Since the company that offers more wages and salaries is able to win talented workforce, Qantas misses this opportunity. Conclusion Qantas Airline has great opportunity of performing effectively after is address challenges associated with recruitment. It can be concluded that the major challenges facing recruitment in Qantas include challenge of achieving diversity recruitment, scarcity of skilled workforce, high cost of recruitment, complex recruitment procedure and inability to offer competitive salary packages. It is therefore recommended that Qantas adopt creative solution to these problem to recruit and attain highly skilled workforce in order to minimizing operation cost and increase profitability. 4 Myth Theories There are four basic theories of myth. Those theories are: the rational myth theory, functional myth theory, structural myth theory, and the phsycological myth theory. The rational myth theory states that myths were created to explain natural events and forces. Functional myths are what you call the kinds of myths that were created as a type of social control. The third myth theory is the structural myth theory. This theory says that myths were patterned after human mind and human nature. The phsycological myth theory is the fourth myth theory which states that myths are based on human emotion. The rational myth theory states that myths were made to better understand natural events and forces that occurred in the everyday lives of people. This theory also explains that the gods and goddesses controlled all of these happenings of nature. Examples of this type of myth are creation myths from different cultures. Creation myths explain how man was created and explain what the gods and goddesses used and what actions they took to create humans. These myths also tell what substances were used (if any) in order for man to exist. The existence of man is a natural event but creation myths give other explanations. The functional myth theory talks about how myths were used to teach morality and social behavior. It states that myths told about what types of things should and shouldnt be done, and the consequences for those wrong doings. The functional myth theory also states that myths were created for social control and served the function of insuring stability in a society. A story about a tribe who rebelled against the great serpent, Degei, is a good example of a functional myth. This story is about a tribe who learned many skills from their great serpent god, Degei, and then became Degeis workers and servants. Two chiefs of this tribe were sick of working for him and tried to defeat him; they were too weak for Degei. Instead of winning their freedom, they were killed in a great flood caused by Degei. This myth is trying to say that you should not be lazy because if you are, then you will regret it. Structural myths are said to be myths based on human emotion. These types of myths show the two sides of the human mind; the good side and the bad side. They show the divided self and the duality of human nature. Myths about Hercules show how the human mind can be both good and bad. Hercules did both good and bad things. One of the bad things he did was (in Jason and the Argonauts) he stole a broach pin from the treasure chamber of the god Talos. This sin caused his friend to be killed. Hercules knew that his friend was killed because of his sin, so to make up for it, he vowed to stay on the island until his friend was found. The phsycological myth theory states how myths are based on human emotion and that they come from the human subconscious mind. Cultures all around the world had similar fears, questions, and wishes which, to them, were unexplainable. That is the reason that phsycological myths were made; and that is why there are archetypes shared between cultures. Archetypes are general forms and characters used by all cultures. Some archetypes found between cultures are having a sky god (Zeus and Oleron),a sea god (Poseidon and Olokun), and an agricultural god (Orisha-Oko and Demeter). These archetypes are examples of how people think alike when it comes to things that are to them mysteries and fears. In conclusion, it appears that man created myths for quite a few reasons. These reasons include explaining the unknown, natural events and forces, to show the duality and pureness of human nature and the human mind, and to help societies maintain order and remain stable. There must be more reasons of exactly why myths should have arisen but that is beyond the extent of this essay. Mythology

From Mill town to Utopia essays During the early 1800s woman were still not able to vote but were able to work. In the article, From Utopia to Mill Town. Women chose to work in mills instead of more formal jobs. Working in the mills allowed woman to get more pay and gave them a sense of freedom. Lowells Mills employed many women which were White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Many women in the mills were from New England farms. Having worked in farms for so long gave women the idea of routine. The women who worked at mills were those of low incomes and wanted to have independence from complete monotony. As viewed by most Americans if not all Americans those of low income dream of having a radiant lifestyle. Women who chose working in mills over traditional jobs such as teaching or house wife longed for that lifestyle Due to lack of labor laws women were forced to work 6 days being up before sunlight and ending at dusk. The women received $2.00 to $4.00. This was half the average working man. The women usually worked 12 hours a day depending on the season. Women were only given 3 holidays a year without pay. Working in the mills were unsafe environment for any mill worker to endure. Due to lack of knowledge of new machines many women were hurt. During the year the windows were nailed shut and women had to suffer the heat and dangerous fumes in the air. Critics even stated that women who worked in such conditions were going home to die. It was a very harsh time for women. Even though they were making okay money the effects on there body and safety may not have been worth it. The Lowell experiment failed due to increase hours and pay falling. The LFLRA (Lowell Female Labor Reform Association) and began protesting against wage cuts and increased hours in unsafe conditions.
